A team of scientists at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) and the National Institutes of Health have piloted psychotherapy for the prevention of excessive weight gain in teenage girls deemed 'at-risk' for obesity. The study, published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders, found that girls who participated in Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) may be better able to prevent their body mass index (BMI) from increasing excessively over the course of a year compared to girls who took traditional health education classes. Deployment and Use of Mental Health Services Among U.S. Army Wives
The deployment of soldiers to the ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan is increasing
the need for mental health services provided for their family members, according to a new study by
researchers at RTI International, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Uniformed
Services University of the Health Sciences. The study found extended U.S. Army deployments increase the
occurrence of depression, anxiety, sleep disorders and other mental health diagnoses for soldiers’ wives left
at home. Combined Federal Campaign
USU's 2009 Combined Federal Campaign will close on January 15, 2010, and we have raised $133,000....80 percent of our goal. But we aren't done yet. We kicked off the campaign with a campus-wide event in October, collecting over $12,000 in the first week alone! There was pumpkin painting for the kids at Halloween, an overwhelming turnout for our chili cook off, present wrapping, and other activities. Donating can be accomplished either by payroll deduction or by making a one-time gift in the form of cash or check. Please take the time to look through the 2009 Catalog of Caring and remember, when you give through the Uniformed Services University Combined Federal Campaign you become a star in someone's life. The help and hope we offer through donations has an immeasurable impact on those in need.
